TDS 194R handled automatically on every reward
TDS 194R compliance in Reward Max automatically calculates and deducts tax on business rewards that exceed ₹20,000 per recipient in a financial year, verifies PAN, and issues TDS certificates and compliance reports — so finance doesn't track it by hand. From 1 April 2026 the rule sits in Section 393 of the Income-tax Act, 2025 (formerly Section 194R), with the same 10% rate and ₹20,000 threshold.
- Tracks the ₹20,000 threshold per recipient
- PAN verification
- TDS certificates and compliance reports
Explained
What does Section 194R mean for loyalty and incentive programs?
Section 194R of the Income-tax Act, 1961 requires tax to be deducted at source on benefits or perquisites given to a resident in the course of business, once their value crosses ₹20,000 for that recipient in a financial year. From 1 April 2026 the same requirement sits in Section 393 of the Income-tax Act, 2025, with the same 10% rate and ₹20,000 threshold. Rewards given to dealers, distributors, retailers and tradespeople in loyalty and incentive programs can fall within its scope.
For a program team, the important word is 'per recipient'. A partner may earn points in a channel scheme, win a gamified contest and receive a festive gift in the same year. Each of those counts toward the same threshold, even if different teams run them. Tracking that by hand across spreadsheets is where most compliance problems start.
The other practical requirement is a verified PAN for each recipient, because deduction and reporting depend on it. Programs that collect PAN only when someone asks to redeem a large reward tend to find gaps at year end.
How 194R applies to a particular scheme, reward type or partner can depend on the details, so confirm specific cases with your tax adviser. What a platform can do is make sure the data is right: who received what, when, and what was deducted.
The challenge
Why 194R is hard to manage by hand
Rewards come from many programs, but the threshold is per person per year.
01
Many programs, one threshold
Points, gifts and cash from different schemes all count toward the same limit.
02
Missing PANs
Without a verified PAN, deduction and reporting break down.
03
Year-end scramble
Finance reconciles rewards across spreadsheets at year end.
04
Audit questions
Auditors want to see what was paid, to whom, and what was deducted.

Best practice
How to keep reward programs 194R-ready
Bring every reward into one ledger. If rewards are issued from several tools — a loyalty platform, a separate gifting vendor, manual bank transfers — no one has the full picture per recipient. Running redemptions through Reward Max keeps the record in one place.
Verify PAN at enrolment. Reward Max includes PAN verification in Digital KYC, so the information needed for deduction and reporting is there before rewards add up.
Make compliance automatic. Reward Max tracks reward value per recipient through the financial year, deducts TDS once the threshold is crossed, and generates TDS certificates and compliance reports, with audit support built in. Finance reviews the output instead of rebuilding it.
- One record of rewards per recipient, across all schemes
- PAN verified before rewards build up
- Deduction applied automatically, not at year end
- Certificates and reports ready for audit
