The basics
What is a retailer loyalty program?
A retailer loyalty program rewards the shop owners who stock, display and sell a brand's products to end customers. Retailers earn points on purchases, product scans, display tasks or visits by the brand's field team, and redeem them for rewards.
India has a very large number of small, independent retailers, and the person behind the counter strongly influences what a customer buys. A retailer who knows your brand and is rewarded for selling it will recommend it, give it better shelf space and reorder it more readily.
Retailer programs have to be simple. Shop owners are busy and many will not install another app, so enrolment and updates need to work on WhatsApp or through a field rep, and earning needs to take seconds.
On LoyaltyBoard, retailers can earn from QR scans, uploaded invoices read by OCR, display tasks and visit check-ins, and the program works alongside Sales Track so field reps can enrol and support retailers during visits.
A retailer program also creates a direct line to the counter. Brands that usually reach retailers only through distributors can share scheme news, launches and offers with every enrolled shop at once, and see which outlets are active.
Best practice
How to keep thousands of retailers engaged
Make the first reward easy to reach. Retailers judge a program in its first few weeks; an early, achievable reward builds the habit of scanning or claiming.
Use your field team. Reps already visit outlets regularly, so they are the best people to enrol retailers, explain schemes and help with the first claim.
Keep communication short and frequent. A WhatsApp alert when points arrive or a scheme starts is read far more reliably than an email, and messages in the retailer's own language land better still.
Measure activity, not just enrolment. A large number of enrolled retailers means little if most never scan or claim. Track monthly active retailers by region and focus your field team on outlets that have gone quiet.
- Offer an early, easy-to-reach reward
- Enrol retailers through field reps and WhatsApp
- Reward displays and repeat orders, not only volume
- Add scratch cards or spin wheels for daily engagement
- Send alerts in the retailer's language
