The basics
What is a distributor loyalty program?
A distributor loyalty program rewards the distributors who buy from a manufacturer and supply retailers in their territory. Rewards are usually linked to primary purchases, focus-product sales, outlet coverage and other goals the brand and distributor agree on.
Distributors are fewer in number than dealers or retailers, but each one controls a large share of a territory's sales. That makes the relationship high-stakes: a distributor who feels under-rewarded or unfairly measured can slow a launch or quietly favour other brands.
Because distributor rewards are large, accuracy matters more than anywhere else in the channel. Schemes calculated in spreadsheets invite disputes. Calculating from the same order data both sides can see removes most of the argument before it starts.
On LoyaltyBoard, distributor schemes can be calculated from orders in Distribution+, IMAST's distribution management system, so rewards follow real primary sales. Other DMS platforms connect through REST APIs on the Enterprise plan.
A good distributor program also strengthens planning. When rewards are tied to clear goals such as focus-SKU depth or coverage, the brand and distributor share the same picture of what success looks like for the territory, and quarterly reviews become far more productive.
Best practice
How to run a distributor program without disputes
Agree the rules in writing before the scheme starts, including how returns, credit notes and cancelled orders are treated. Most distributor disputes come from edge cases that were never defined.
Use one source of truth for the numbers. When the brand, the sales team and the distributor all see the same scheme progress, conversations shift from arguing about the figures to planning how to beat them.
Reward more than volume. Coverage, focus-SKU depth and timely payment often matter as much as tonnage, and rewarding them steers distributors toward a healthier business for both sides.
It also helps to review results together. A short quarterly review of scheme performance with each distributor turns the program into a planning tool rather than a payout calculation, and surfaces problems while there is still time to fix them.
- Define returns and credit-note treatment upfront
- Calculate schemes from order data, not spreadsheets
- Reward focus SKUs and coverage alongside volume
- Use tiers to recognise your strongest distributors
- Pay rewards promptly once a scheme closes
