The idea

What are experience rewards, and when do they work?

Experience rewards are rewards members enjoy rather than own: travel, stays and experiences instead of a voucher or an appliance. In channel programs they are usually reserved for the top of the pyramid — the highest tier, the winners of a quarterly contest or partners who hit an ambitious annual target.

They work because they are memorable and visible. A partner who earns a trip talks about it, and other partners notice. That makes experiences a strong motivator for the top tier, where an extra gift card may not change much, and a natural reward for long-term loyalty rather than a single purchase.

They are less suited to everyday earning. Most members redeem small balances often, and for them cash, gift cards and merchandise are more useful. The best programs keep experiences as an aspiration at the top of the catalogue and everyday rewards underneath.

Where they fit

Ways brands use experience rewards

Experiences sit at the top of a well-designed program.

Top-tier benefit

A reward reserved for Platinum or equivalent tier members.

Contest prize

A prize for leaderboard winners in a quarter or season.

Annual target reward

A reward for partners who hit a stretch annual goal.

Designing it

How to build an experience tier that motivates

Make the path visible. Members should see, in the app and in their language, how far they are from the experience tier and what they need to do to reach it. A progress view does more for motivation than the reward itself.

Set the qualifying rules before you announce the reward. Decide how points, tiers or contest rankings turn into an experience, what happens in a tie and what members can choose instead if they can't travel. Publish those rules with the scheme so no one is surprised at the end.

Offer an alternative. Some partners can't leave their business for a trip, so let them choose an equivalent reward from the catalogue. That keeps the reward fair and avoids disappointment.

Celebrate winners publicly. Announcing who earned an experience — on WhatsApp, in the app or at a dealer meet — turns one partner's reward into motivation for the rest of the channel, and costs nothing extra.

  • Show progress towards the experience tier
  • Publish qualifying rules up front
  • Offer an equivalent alternative
  • Announce winners to motivate the rest of the channel

    Tax and records

TDS and reporting are handled for every reward.

Compliance

Tax and verification on high-value rewards

Experience rewards are high in value, so they are where verification and tax matter most. Reward Max runs Digital KYC — Aadhaar eKYC, PAN verification and bank validation — and AI checks for suspicious redemptions, duplicates and velocity abuse before rewards go out.

Rewards given in the course of business count towards the TDS threshold whether they are cash or in kind. Under Section 393 of the Income-tax Act, 2025 (formerly Section 194R), TDS at 10% applies to the full value once a recipient's total for the financial year exceeds ₹20,000. Reward Max tracks rewards per recipient, deducts TDS and issues certificates and reports; confirm how experience rewards in kind are handled with your tax adviser.

FAQs

Experience and travel reward FAQs

What are experience rewards?

Rewards members enjoy rather than own, such as travel and experiences, usually reserved for top performers in a loyalty or incentive program.

Are experiences part of the Reward Max catalogue?

Yes. Travel experiences are one of the categories in the 10,000+ reward catalogue.

Who should qualify for experience rewards?

Usually the top tier, contest winners or partners who hit a stretch annual target. Everyday earners are better served by cash, gift cards and merchandise.

What if a winner can't travel?

Offer an equivalent reward from the catalogue so the reward stays fair.

Is TDS deducted on travel rewards?

Business rewards in kind count towards the ₹20,000 yearly threshold under Section 393 of the Income-tax Act, 2025 (formerly 194R). Reward Max handles TDS; confirm specifics with your tax adviser.

How are high-value redemptions protected?

With Digital KYC and AI checks for suspicious redemptions, duplicates and velocity abuse.

Can experience rewards be tied to LoyaltyBoard tiers?

Yes. Reward Max is the redemption engine behind LoyaltyBoard, so tier and contest results flow into rewards.

What does Reward Max cost?

Pay-as-you-go with a 0.75% platform fee on transaction value; fulfilment fees depend on volume.

How often should experience rewards be offered?

Usually once or twice a year, tied to an annual target, a tier review or a major contest, so they stay special.
